Subject Matter Expert (SME) Customs

About the role

Maersk is looking for an experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) Customs to join its Customs team in Durban. The SME acts as the key link between the Customs organization and Functional Process Owners (FPO) and Platform teams, driving process standardization, operational excellence, continuous improvement and digital transformation. The role supports system implementations and builds operational capabilities across the business.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the main point of contact between Area Customs teams and FPO/Platform teams, ensuring alignment on initiatives.
• Lead and project manage customer implementation activities for customs processes and system enhancements.
• Support Super Users and Area MCS Managers, and escalate issues to Central FPO and Platform teams when needed.
• Drive process optimization, standardization and continuous improvement across Customs operations.
• Take part in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and help deploy new systems, tools and functionality.
• Monitor performance metrics and reporting to spot trends, gaps and improvement opportunities.
• Develop, run and deliver training, and support change management for new processes and technologies.

Required profile

• 3-5 years of experience in Customs, Supply Chain, Logistics, Freight Forwarding or Trade Compliance.
• Experience with operational reporting platforms, performance metrics and analytics tools.
• Proven track record supporting business transformation, process improvement or system implementation projects.
• Certification or qualification in Customs, Supply Chain, Logistics, International Trade or a related field is advantageous.
• Experience supporting training, change management or system adoption is beneficial.

• Data analytics and reporting, with strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Systems and technical knowledge of operational platforms and reporting tools.
• Project management and implementation experience.
