Steward (Hotel Kitchen Attendant)

About the role

The Steward ensures the highest standards of cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene across the kitchen, dishwashing, storage and food‑service areas of One&Only Cape Town. Working closely with the culinary and banquet teams, the role supports smooth operations by keeping all equipment, utensils and workspaces spotless and ready for use.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen, dishwashing, storage and food‑service zones in line with hotel policies and health‑safety regulations.
• Clean, sanitise and correctly store all kitchen equipment, utensils, crockery and work surfaces.
• Operate and maintain cleaning machinery, safely handle cleaning chemicals, and monitor stock levels.
• Report maintenance and safety issues promptly.
• Assist with waste management, recycling and garbage‑disposal areas.
• Support banquet operations, conduct inventory counts and undertake special cleaning projects.
• Provide basic kitchen support as needed and adhere to attendance and roster requirements.
• Perform any additional duties assigned by management to ensure smooth department operation.

Required profile

• Ability to communicate effectively in English.
• High school diploma or equivalent vocational training.
• Previous experience in a janitorial or cleaning role.
• Familiarity with sanitation regulations and proper chemical handling.
• Attention to detail, ability to follow directions and adapt to changing priorities.
• Physical capability to transport equipment, work in high‑temperature, moist and noisy environments.
