Specialist: Software Engineer

About the role

The Specialist: Software Engineer will design, develop, test and maintain software solutions that power Vodacom’s digital products and customer‑facing platforms. You will work in agile squads, turning user stories into reliable code while improving system stability and performance.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse user stories and technical requirements to produce designs and working code.
• Implement features using Vodacom‑approved technologies, frameworks and engineering guardrails.
• Develop modular, maintainable code aligned with platform standards and domain patterns.
• Participate in iterative delivery across sprints using CI/CD pipelines.
• Build and execute unit, integration and functional tests; support QA during system and UAT cycles.
• Perform L2/L3 technical support, troubleshoot incidents, conduct root‑cause analysis and apply corrective changes.
• Maintain technical documentation to ensure operational continuity.
• Collaborate with Product Owners, BAs, Architects and DevOps engineers; contribute to backlog refinement, sprint planning and technical estimation.
• Identify opportunities to reduce technical debt and improve platform efficiency.

Required profile

• Matric/Grade 12 (essential) and a 3‑year degree or diploma in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years of software engineering experience building production services at scale, preferably in telecommunications or large‑enterprise digital environments.
• Demonstrated experience with API engineering (REST/GraphQL), test automation, CI/CD and observability.
• Exposure to TMF patterns and GraphQL/Apollo is advantageous.
