Sommelier

About the role

Karen Tupper Recruitment is recruiting a Sommelier for a full-time position in the Western Cape, based in the Cape Town area. The Sommelier advises guests on wine, curates food and wine pairings and manages the wine list and wine room.

Key responsibilities

• Provide personalised wine recommendations and expertly curated food and wine pairings.
• Maintain an up-to-date wine list with Food & Beverage Management and the Culinary Team.
• Manage the wine dispensary, stock control, beverage requisitions and sales records.
• Maximise revenue through effective sales techniques and beverage promotions.
• Liaise with wine suppliers on new products, promotions and staff training.
• Conduct beverage training to improve the team's product knowledge and service standards.
• Ensure wine quality, correct storage, equipment maintenance and compliance with hygiene and safety procedures.
• Maintain high service standards and resolve guest concerns professionally.

Required profile

• South African citizen residing in the Cape Town area.
• Matric / Grade 12 qualification.
• Previous experience as a Sommelier, Wine Steward or in a similar role.
• Cape Wine Academy, WSET Level 2 or a related wine qualification is essential.
• Extensive knowledge of Southern African wines, vineyards and international wine varieties.
• Fluent in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Well presented, professional, creative and commercially minded.

Required skills

• Ability to create complementary food and wine pairings.
• Computer literacy.
• Strong organisational, leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Restaurant service and management experience is advantageous.
