Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Core/API & Process Automation

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer on Camunda's Core / API & Process Automation team, you will work on the heart of Camunda 8 – an event‑sourced, distributed workflow engine that powers critical business processes for thousands of customers worldwide. You will help shape the engine’s future while ensuring it remains fast, reliable, and ready for AI‑driven automation.

Key responsibilities

• Optimize hot paths to extract maximum performance from the workflow engine.
• Design maintainability and versioning strategies for an ever‑growing event log.
• Handle concurrency challenges between engine execution and simultaneous user mutations.
• Guarantee data integrity and prevent process dead‑locks, protecting customer revenue.
• Define and implement features that enable AI agents to interact with and drive the engine.
• Lead technical discussions, mentor teammates, and set high engineering standards.

Required profile

• Several years of experience building high‑performance backend systems.
• Deep understanding of distributed architectures, event sourcing, and concurrency control.
• Proven ability to design robust, version‑tolerant data models.
• Track record of delivering reliable, low‑latency services at scale.
• Comfort with ambiguous problems and capacity to drive technical direction.
