Senior Software Engineer (AI Enabled) - Hybrid

About the role

A leading South African FinTech company, which processes high volumes of payment transactions, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer (AI Enabled) to join its engineering team. The role combines modernising and re-platforming high-volume payment systems with building AI directly into products, using LLMs, RAG, embeddings and vector search. It is a hybrid arrangement: 2 days working from home and 3 days in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Work across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and technical design through development, testing, deployment and production support.
• Integrate LLMs into real-world software, moving beyond simple prompt-and-response apps to more sophisticated AI features using context engineering, embeddings, vector search and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
• Own the architecture around these AI capabilities, working with relational, NoSQL and vector databases so solutions are scalable, secure, reliable and cost-effective.
• Help define how AI is adopted across engineering, set practical standards for AI coding tools, ensure AI-generated code is reviewed and tested, and support a disciplined adoption of AI.

Required profile

• 7+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or Software Developer, including leading technical delivery.
• Proven experience building and deploying AI-powered applications into production.
• Experience leading the migration or re-platforming of live, high-volume systems.
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, with exposure to vector databases.

Required skills

• Strong C# and .NET 8 development experience.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs beyond basic prompts, including RAG, embeddings, vector search and context engineering.
• Strong cloud experience with AWS or Azure.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD, testing, monitoring and production support.
• Experience with JavaScript and React; Python experience is advantageous.
