Senior Software Developer (Contract)

About the role

The Senior Software Developer will join the IT team in Cape Town, reporting to the Head of IT. You will lead the redesign of core operational systems, moving from legacy COBOL and Visual Basic applications to a modern Microsoft stack, supporting public transport operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and design of new applications at platform, application and database levels.
• Mentor and guide developers on best‑practice coding standards and techniques.
• Write high‑quality code and actively contribute to hands‑on development.
• Collaborate with the Head of IT on overall system design, user experience and technology strategy.
• Define and implement software development frameworks, methodologies, and release processes.
• Analyse legacy systems to extract business rules and translate them into modern solutions.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of software development experience, primarily with Microsoft technologies.
• Proven experience leading and mentoring a development team.
• Strong background in application and database design and architecture.
• Ability to translate business requirements into production‑ready applications.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering preferred; Microsoft certifications a plus.
