Senior Research Nurse – Neonatal Infection Studies

About the role

The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University is seeking two Senior Research Nurses to support neonatal infection research on the NeoSep1 clinical trial and related sepsis studies. This is a one‑year fixed‑term position based at the Tygerberg Campus.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate closely with neonatal research doctors and investigators.
• Identify, screen, obtain consent and enroll eligible newborn participants.
• Prepare and administer intravenous trial antibiotics to infants.
• Collect, record and enter study data and medical information according to protocol.
• Follow up participants until hospital discharge and conduct post‑discharge telephone follow‑up.
• Organise and curate study records, provide weekly recruitment and follow‑up updates.
• Report adverse events to the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and SAHPRA.
• Perform general research administration tasks and support the study team.
• Work night shifts and weekends as required by the research schedule.

Required profile

• Senior‑level research nursing experience (Post Level 9).
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
• Ability to perform participant screening, consent, enrolment and intravenous drug administration.
• Strong attention to detail for data collection, entry and regulatory reporting.
