Senior (Project) Geophysicist

About the role

Anglo American is looking for a Senior (Project) Geophysicist to carry out and manage survey design, acquisition, processing, inversion and integrated interpretation of geophysical data for Discovery and near-asset programs in the Africa-Europe-Australasia region and elsewhere, with a focus on sediment-hosted copper and orthomagmatic polymetallic sulphide systems.

Key responsibilities

• Integrate potential field, electromagnetic and seismic data with petrophysics to map sedimentary basin architecture and drive basin-analysis thinking, especially in the Central African Copperbelt
• Contribute the geophysical component to integrated interpretations with geologists, geochemists and structural specialists, and interpret results against multiple geological hypotheses
• Support generative framework mapping of crustal-scale features using deep-penetrating geophysical methods
• Process, forward model and invert geophysical data with industry and in-house codes, and build potential field forward models
• Apply ground and airborne electromagnetic methods, and compile magnetic and gravity surveys into regional datasets
• Design fit-for-purpose surveys, manage contractor QA/QC and lead field assistants and support personnel
• Manage contractors and service providers safely and within budget, and ensure programs comply with SHEC policies and social licence requirements

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Geophysics (post-graduate degree preferred); English fluency required
• At least 8 years of relevant experience, typically around 10 or more for a senior appointment
• Sustained career in applied geophysics with hands-on processing, modelling and interpretation
• Experience managing field logistics in geoscience exploration and/or mining, and general management knowledge (budget, accounting, governance)
• Advantageous: sediment-hosted copper experience, petroleum basin experience, and coding in MATLAB or Python

Required skills

• Magnetic and gravity data processing and interpretation, including compiling multi-vintage surveys (e.g. Geosoft Oasis Montaj)
• Forward modelling and inversion with industry codes such as UBC-GIF and SimPEG
• 3D inversion with petrophysical constraints (e.g. Geoscience Analyst)
• Reflection and/or passive seismic processing and electromagnetic methods (ground and airborne EM, MT)
