Senior Professional Nurse - Surgical ICU

About the role

The Senior Professional Nurse will support the Unit Manager in the Surgical ICU, ensuring safe and positive client experiences while delivering direct patient care. The role also includes mentoring new and student nurses and coordinating care delivery across the unit.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive and safe patient care, mitigating risks and meeting clinical quality standards.
• Manage the overall client experience within the ICU.
• Optimize staffing resources through effective supply, retention, and utilization.
• Develop staff competence through continuous assessment, mentorship, and professional development.
• Assist in managing operational expenses, including stock and capital.

Required profile

• Professional Nurse qualification; Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing preferred for specialist units.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a professional nurse in a hospital setting.
• At least 1 year of mentorship experience.

Required skills

• Pharmacology knowledge.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer systems.
• Infection prevention and control practices.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Patient assessment and nursing record keeping.
