Senior Professional Nurse

About the role

The Senior Professional Nurse supports the Unit Manager in delivering safe, high‑quality patient care while ensuring a positive client experience. The role combines direct clinical duties with mentorship of new and student nurses, helping to mitigate clinical risks and coordinate care delivery across the unit.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive and safe patient care, meeting clinical quality standards and reducing risk.
• Manage the client experience to ensure satisfaction and safety.
• Maintain optimal staffing levels, retention, and utilisation of resources.
• Develop staff competence through continuous assessment, training and mentorship.
• Assist in managing operational expenses, including stock and capital assets.

Required profile

• Professional Nurse qualification.
• Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing for specialist units (e.g., Peri‑operative Nursing).
• Minimum 3 years of professional nursing experience in a hospital setting.
• At least 1 year of mentorship experience.

Required skills

• Pharmacology knowledge.
• Nursing record keeping and documentation.
• Proficiency in nursing processes and procedures.
• Computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
• Understanding of relevant nursing legislation.
• Infection prevention and control practices.
• Scientific nursing principles and audit of patient records.
• Patient assessment and care‑plan development.
• Scope of practice for nurse practitioners.
• Advanced/Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Risk identification and analysis.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) training.
• Mentorship capabilities.
