Senior Nurse / Staff Nurse / Phlebotomy Technician – Hermanus

About the role

An opportunity exists for a Senior Professional Nurse/Staff Nurse/Phlebotomy Technician In‑Charge to join the PathCare team at the Hermanus branch. The role requires proven phlebotomy competence, leadership ability, and alignment with PathCare values.

Key responsibilities

• Manage pathology operations at the site, including HR, finance, quality, and system audits.
• Mentor, develop and train team members to foster growth and empowerment.
• Collaborate with the Nursing Services Manager and pathologists to drive innovation.
• Implement organisational strategies, objectives and policies.
• Oversee day‑to‑day HR administration for direct reports.
• Identify and execute initiatives to improve operational efficiencies.
• Perform advanced maintenance, housekeeping and troubleshooting of technical equipment.
• Handle stakeholder needs, prioritise patient care and strengthen relationships.
• Address complaints and queries promptly and effectively.
• Model and promote PathCare values throughout the depot.

Required profile

• Nursing Diploma or Degree, Enrolled Nurse Certificate or Phlebotomy Technician qualification.
• Current registration with SANC/HPCSA and at least 5 years post‑registration experience.
• 2‑3 years phlebotomy experience, including order of draw and POCT instrument operation.
• Valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission).
• Management or supervisory experience in a pathology environment (advantageous).
• Experience maintaining QA systems.
• Proven leadership, delegation and team‑building abilities.
• Strong interpersonal skills with internal and external stakeholders.
• Effective verbal and electronic communication.
• Ability to optimise processes, solve problems and work under pressure.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy – order of draw, POCT instruments, arterial blood gas analysis.
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) proficiency.
• Intermediate Microsoft Office skills.
• Quality Assurance system management.
• Advanced troubleshooting of technical equipment.
