Senior Materials Tester (Civil Engineering Laboratories)

About the role

SGS South Africa, Matrolab division, is looking for a Senior Materials Tester for its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories. The role covers both on-site and commercial laboratory work, assisting the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager with all tasks, keeping the laboratory clean and following instructions from technicians, supervisors or authorised personnel.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and carry out tests in line with prescribed methods, taking responsibility for tests within your competence
• Prepare materials for testing (soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, aggregate) with bench calculations as needed
• Clean the site or workshop after each task or at the end of the day, removing masking tape, tins and other consumables
• Follow all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system and report deviations, irregularities and non-conformances orally
• Perform field and laboratory work including sampling, calculations and accurate test methods
• Complete timesheets accurately each day and help maintain discipline in the department
• Carry out other reasonable tasks assigned by the site supervisor, laboratory manager or regional manager

Required profile

• Grade 12 (NQF 4) or three years of relevant experience for each year of schooling below Grade 12
• Recognition of prior learning qualification
• Proficiency in English (read, write, speak)
• Integrity, good interpersonal skills and ability to command respect while maintaining good staff relationships
• Physically able to move and pick up samples as required

Required skills

• Competence in all laboratory tests, including SANS and THM 1 test methods
• Full calculations for the tests mentioned
• Advantageous: sampling and preparation experience, administration experience, and fieldwork such as density tests, layer/stockpile sampling, concrete cube handling, DCP, ring and ball tests, sand patch, on-site viscosity tests and asphalt/bitumen sampling
• Computer literacy in Word, Excel and Outlook
