Senior Legal Advisor, Global Markets, CIB

About the role

A major African-focused financial services group is looking for a Senior Legal Advisor for its Global Markets division, based in Johannesburg. The role supports the group's markets financing business by driving strategic legal objectives, advising stakeholders on complex legal issues and proactively identifying and mitigating legal risks in line with Standard Bank Group (SBG) standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement legal strategies supporting the Global Markets division, with a focus on financing transactions.
• Provide comprehensive legal advice to internal stakeholders on complex legal issues, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations and internal policies.
• Draft, review and negotiate legal documentation and agreements related to financial markets activities.
• Advise on identifying and mitigating legal risks in the markets financing business.
• Ensure adherence to SBG's legal standards, policies and procedures.
• Stay up to date with changes in the legal and regulatory landscape affecting financial markets.
• Collaborate with other legal teams and business units to provide integrated legal support.

Required profile

• LLB degree or equivalent legal qualification, admitted as an attorney with the ability to practice law.
• Minimum of 8 to 10 years of proven experience giving legal guidance, including drafting, vetting, reviewing, disseminating and negotiating complex legal documents.
• At least 8 years of dedicated experience in the legal or financial services sector.
• Experience as a lead lawyer on ISDA and GMRA transactions, and substantial experience with bonds, loans and structured financing.
• Strong behavioural competencies: clear communication, strategy development, directing and empowering others, rapport building and teamwork.
