Senior Lecturer – Urban and Regional Planning

About the role

The University of the Free State seeks a senior academic to lead research and teaching in Urban and Regional Planning at its Bloemfontein campus. The role combines high‑level research, postgraduate supervision and community engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Initiate, conduct and sustain quality research outputs in Urban and Regional Planning.
• Provide research leadership and mentorship to colleagues and postgraduate students.
• Teach and assess postgraduate modules, develop learning materials and deliver feedback.
• Lead study programmes at the postgraduate level and supervise graduate theses.
• Participate in community‑engagement initiatives and recruit postgraduate candidates.
• Identify and pursue external funding and collaborative research opportunities.
• Perform academic and administrative duties at departmental, faculty and university levels.

Required profile

• PhD (NQF level 10) in Human Settlements, Urban and Regional Planning or a closely related field.
• 5–10 publications in internationally recognised journals or equivalent industry experience.
• National recognition for specialist expertise and an NRF rating or strong potential to obtain one.
• Proven experience supervising master’s degree students and mentoring postgraduate researchers.
• Active membership in a national or international scholarly society or research committee.
• Demonstrated ability to secure external research funding and prior lecturing experience.
