Senior Laboratory Analyst

About the role

SGS Bateman's multidiscipline engineering team provides integrated engineering services for processing plants and related operations. This full-time Senior Laboratory Analyst position covers the analysis of samples, personnel management and training, and the maintenance of quality and safety systems in the laboratory.

Key responsibilities

• Process and analyse samples according to established methods and procedures, including routine tests and quality control samples, and record results accurately on QC charts and worksheets
• Manage staff, distribute workload and schedules, provide problem-solving advice and organise in-service training and attendance at training courses
• Operate instruments according to specified procedures, keep log-books and worksheets, and follow good laboratory practice and safety procedures (MSDS, protective clothing)
• Plan tests, monitor consumables, schedule work to meet customer requirements and generate worksheets in advance
• Investigate and process nonconforming and improvement issues, implement corrective and preventive actions, and control instrument inventory, calibration and maintenance
• Develop, control and maintain system documents, and authorise customers on turnaround times, sampling advice and quotations
• Accept work, dispatch samples to approved subcontractors and arrange inter-lab tests

Required profile

• Appropriate tertiary qualification
• At least 3 years of relevant laboratory experience
• Proficiency in English and Afrikaans (read, speak, write)
• Attention to detail, systematic and thorough approach, ability to work with minimal supervision and in a high-throughput environment

Required skills

• Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word and Excel
• Above-average typing speed
• Good interpersonal skills with colleagues, clients and suppliers
