Senior Engineer - Locomotive Data Systems

About the role

Transnet Freight Rail is looking for a Senior Engineer (Traction and Locomotive Integration Technology) in Braamfontein. The role provides engineering expertise in locomotive data systems, covering specification, front- and back-end software development and maintenance, so that Transnet can deliver a sustainable, safe, predictable and affordable transport service.

Key responsibilities

• Develop a locomotive data systems strategy, including data transmission protocol design, migration to a microservices architecture and continuous monitoring of data collection devices.
• Build software for condition monitoring, predictive maintenance techniques and algorithms, and back-office software (database management, back-end, dashboards, energy management, fault alerts).
• Analyse the existing codebase, design data transmission devices, and carry out failure and fault data analysis.
• Ensure compliance with data governance, data security and the OT cyber security roadmap, and implement continuous improvements to cyber security.
• Use data mining and time-series analytics to derive insights on locomotive failures, and maintain version control systems (e.g. Git) and CI/CD pipelines.

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in the railway industry; 3 years in general software development is advantageous.
• Advantageous: experience with Java SE/EE, Angular, JavaScript, PHP, HTML/CSS and Python; predictive modelling, AI, machine learning, data visualisation, data frames and statistical analysis.
• Experience designing, applying, testing and configuring TCP/IP or UDP/IP protocols.
