Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Implementation Officer

About the role

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is seeking a Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Implementation Officer to join its SHEQ Portfolio in Pretoria. The incumbent will provide administrative and operational support to ensure compliance with South African SHE legislation and international standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate monthly SHE management walkabouts (MBWAs) and record findings.
• Support incident investigations, produce reports, conduct root‑cause analysis and track remedial actions.
• Raise SHE incidents or non‑conformities in the XGRC tool and manage them to closure.
• Ensure completion, sign‑off and updating of SHE risk assessments.
• Participate in internal and external SHEQ audits.
• Plan and execute emergency evacuation drills in coordination with the SHEQ Department.
• Liaise with the CSIR Medical Centre for incident follow‑up and medical surveillance.
• Maintain records of SHE management reviews, committee meetings and divisional SHE procedures.
• Provide operational support to SHE representatives, including inspections, procurement of SHE materials, tracking of training records and equipment registers.
• Maintain SHE documentation in line with the SHEQ Document Management Procedure and prepare the annual SHE training calendar.

Required profile

• Proven experience in SHE implementation support within an industrial or research environment.
• Good knowledge of South African SHE legislative requirements and ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 standards.
• Ability to conduct incident investigations, risk assessments and audit participation.
• Strong organisational skills for managing documentation, training schedules and emergency drills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the XGRC incident management tool.
