Safari Manager

About the role

The Safari Manager leads all safari operations at a luxury game reserve, ensuring exceptional guest experiences while upholding the highest standards of safety, conservation and operational efficiency. This role oversees guiding teams, vehicle fleets, bush‑walking activities and anti‑poaching initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Manage daily operations of the safari department and coordinate game drives and guided walks.
• Lead, mentor and supervise Field Guides, Head Rangers and Trackers, including roster planning and performance reviews.
• Oversee servicing, maintenance and roadworthiness of the safari vehicle fleet and maintain records of inspections and repairs.
• Ensure all safari equipment, radios, first‑aid kits, recovery gear and firearms are properly maintained and compliant.
• Promote guest safety during drives and walks, adhering to FGASA and reserve regulations.
• Support wildlife monitoring, conservation projects and anti‑poaching protocols.
• Assist with budgeting, departmental planning and operational reporting.
• Liaise with the Lodge Manager and other departments to deliver seamless guest experiences and resolve feedback.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12 (Matric) qualification.
• FGASA Level 2 certification (Level 3 or Professional Field Guide preferred).
• FGASA Lead Trails Guide and Advanced Rifle Handling (ARH) certification.
• DEAT/NDT registered guide status.
• Valid First Aid Level 1 (Level 2 advantageous), driver’s licence with PrDP and firearm competency certificate.
• At least 5 years experience as a Field Guide in a luxury safari lodge or private reserve.
• 2–3 years experience in a supervisory or Safari Manager/Head Ranger role.
• Proven experience managing a safari vehicle fleet and overseeing equipment maintenance.

Required skills

• FGASA Level 2 and Lead Trails Guide qualifications.
• Advanced Rifle Handling (ARH) certification.
• First Aid Level 1 certification.
• Valid driver’s licence with PrDP.
• Firearm competency certification.
