Risk Engineer – Large Commercial Property

About the role

The Risk Engineer will own the risk engineering and high‑level underwriting of very large commercial property policies (exposures > R250 million) throughout the entire policy lifecycle. You will work closely with brokers, clients and internal underwriters to provide expert advice, risk improvement recommendations and technical solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Identify hazards and risk exposures on premises and advise on risk improvement measures.
• Review internal and external survey reports, assess risk, and propose reduction or alternative risk‑management actions.
• Assist underwriters in risk selection and retention by providing loss‑control expertise.
• Evaluate fire plans, rational designs and other technical documents.
• Prepare RRR letters for brokers and negotiate under guidance of technical managers.
• Conduct underwriting reviews for new business, amendments, multi‑claimants and renewals.
• Engage fire engineers, fire authorities and other stakeholders as required.
• Manage incoming survey work pools, ensure compliance with the National Survey Policy and handle queries from stakeholders.

Required profile

• Matric engineering qualification at NQF level 6 or higher.
• FPA fire‑engineering courses and Santam RIA modules completed.
• Advanced knowledge of relevant SANS and firefighting codes/standards.
• Minimum 3 years experience in risk surveying or engineering.
• Proficient with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint (intermediate level).
