Retail General Manager

About the role

A well-established textile manufacturing and retail company supplying national retail chains, independent retailers, wholesalers and export markets is looking for an experienced Retail General Manager based in Jacobs, Durban South. The role covers the overall operational and commercial performance, growth and strategic development of the retail division, with senior leadership across the retail network so that stores meet sales and profitability targets, keep consistent operational standards and deliver excellent customer experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement retail growth strategies, assess store performance and identify new stores, markets, channels and product categories
• Own divisional sales performance and drive revenue, margin and profitability; monitor turnover, gross margins, conversion rates and customer trends
• Provide leadership and operational oversight of the Retail Manager and store network, ensuring consistent standards, visual merchandising, stock availability, housekeeping and compliance
• Manage retail budgets, operating expenses and store P&Ls, and review store profit and loss statements
• Work with Marketing and Brand teams on promotions and product launches, and measure their results
• Lead, coach and develop the Retail Manager and Store Managers, set performance expectations and partner with HR on recruitment and talent development
• Maintain customer service standards, monitor feedback and complaints and report on sales, profitability, operations, people performance and business risks to the Head of Retail

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in Business Management, Retail Management, Commerce or a related field preferred
• 8-10+ years of progressive retail experience, including at least 5 years in a significant retail management or leadership role
• Proven experience managing retail sales performance, store operations and commercial growth
• Experience leading, coaching and developing retail management teams
• Strong understanding of stock management, shrinkage control, merchandising, customer service and retail compliance
