Resident Engineer – Road Construction

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer to lead the delivery of a SANRAL Community Development Contract in Kimberley. The role involves overseeing construction activities, ensuring compliance with design specifications, and managing the interface between contractors, designers, and clients.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the Resident Engineer for the SANRAL Community Development Contract, handling contract administration and client liaison.
• Review construction drawings and coordinate contractor queries with designers through established communication channels.
• Inspect works and test results to maintain quality control standards.
• Prepare and update cost estimates to project completion.
• Maintain site administration records in line with SMEC’s quality management system and Construction Manual.
• Take minutes and contribute to technical and site meetings.
• Produce monthly progress reports and monitor programme schedules and contract budgets.
• Manage site supervision resources, monitor work quality, and handle claims.

Required profile

• BSc/B.Ing/BTech (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• Minimum 10 years of experience in road and construction projects, including at least 5 years as a Resident Engineer.
• Extensive knowledge of major conditions of contract and experience managing contractual issues.
• Fluent spoken and written English.
• Based in Griekwastad or willing to relocate to Kimberley.
