Researcher/Senior Researcher in Ecologies (2-year contract)

About the role

The Rhodes African Studies Centre (RASC) invites qualified researchers to join its interdisciplinary team for a two‑year contract focused on ecological and environmental research. The position is embedded in a collaborative network spanning several African and European universities.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent and collaborative research on ecological, environmental, and socio‑ecological topics.
• Develop and apply biophysical methods alongside humanities and social‑science approaches.
• Publish findings in leading academic journals and contribute to multi‑author publications.
• Present research at local and international conferences.
• Participate in interdisciplinary project proposals and grant applications.
• Provide informal administrative support, such as coordinating student or club activities related to research.

Required profile

• PhD in Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography, Ecology, Climatology, Hydrology, Water Resource Science, Political Ecology, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Education, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research linking natural sciences with humanities/social sciences.
• Emerging publication record in reputable journals, with at least some work addressing interdisciplinary topics.
• Experience presenting at local conferences; international conference presentations are an advantage.
• Evidence of participation in collaborative research projects.
• Some informal administrative experience (e.g., student or sports club involvement).
