Researcher/Senior Researcher in Ecologies (2-year contract)

About the role

The Rhodes African Studies Centre (RASC) invites qualified candidates to join its team on a two‑year contract as a Researcher or Senior Researcher in Ecologies. The position is research‑focused, contributing to interdisciplinary projects that link natural‑science methods with humanities and social‑science perspectives within the Africa Multiple network.

Key responsibilities

• Design, conduct and lead independent and collaborative research in ecology, environmental sciences, climatology, hydrology or related fields.
• Develop interdisciplinary research proposals and contribute to grant applications.
• Publish findings in leading academic journals and present results at local and international conferences.
• Engage with partner institutions across Africa and Europe, fostering transdisciplinary collaboration.
• Provide informal administrative support, such as coordinating student or club activities related to research.

Required profile

• PhD in Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography, Ecology, Climatology, Hydrology, Water Resource Science, Political Ecology, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Education or a closely related discipline.
• Emerging publication record in reputable journals, preferably with interdisciplinary focus.
• Experience participating in interdisciplinary or collaborative research projects.
• Evidence of conference attendance and presentations; international conference experience is an advantage.
• Some informal administrative experience (e.g., student or sports club involvement).
