Research Nurse – Child TB Study (Fixed‑term)

About the role
The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) at Stellenbosch University seeks a full‑time Professional Nurse to support the DEFIANT study on child and adolescent tuberculosis. The role is based at the Tygerberg campus and involves travelling to clinics across the Cape Metropole for participant recruitment and follow‑up.
Key responsibilities
- Screen and recruit eligible participants according to the study protocol.
- Conduct informed consent procedures in line with ethical and regulatory standards.
- Perform clinical assessments, collect sputum, blood and other samples, and arrange transport to laboratories.
- Administer research questionnaires, capture study data and ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
- Maintain accurate study documentation, perform quality control and support regulatory compliance.
- Trace participants via home/clinic visits and telephone, and conduct retention calls.
- Manage project supplies, stock and inventory, and provide general administrative support.
Required profile
- Registered Professional Nurse qualification with current SANC registration.
- Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection certification.
- Minimum three years’ experience in phlebotomy/sample collection with children/adolescents.
- At least three years’ experience in a research environment or health‑care setting.
- Previous clinical research experience in lung health for adolescents.
- Fluency in English and either isiXhosa or Afrikaans.
- Willingness to travel independently between health facilities and work flexible hours.

- Computer literacy (email, MS Word, MS Teams).
