Regional Indirect Tax Manager

About the role

Trafigura is looking for a Regional Indirect Tax Manager for its in-house Tax department in the Africa region, based in Johannesburg. The role ensures full compliance with tax rules and regulations, manages the indirect tax working capital position, and covers VAT, GST, customs duties and related taxes.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all applicable indirect tax laws, including VAT, GST, sales and use tax, excise tax and customs duties, and monitor changes in tax law
• Maintain Customs and Excise licenses and permits, and provide training in indirect tax
• Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize indirect tax positions and minimize tax liabilities
• Prepare and review indirect tax returns, reports and filings, and perform monthly, quarterly and annual VAT reconciliations
• Manage tax audits and inquiries, respond to authorities and defend tax positions with legal and tax advisors
• Improve tax processes, document African entities' indirect tax policies and map flows, and identify automation opportunities
• Maintain relations with Tax and Customs authorities, produce weekly management reports and assist with new clearing and bond processes

Required profile

• Law or Accounting qualification with specific VAT and Customs and Excise knowledge
• 10 years of experience in VAT and Customs and Excise
• Oil industry experience is a major advantage
• Background in Big Four accounting, legal professions or tax authority work is an advantage
