Qualified Blood Bank Technician / Technologist

About the role

The South African National Blood Service is seeking a qualified Blood Bank Technician or Technologist to perform routine manual and automated testing in its blood bank. The role includes compatibility testing, post‑natal investigations and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations, all carried out in line with SOPs and South African transfusion standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform all operational testing functions (manual and automated) according to SOPs and required timeframes.
• Check blood and blood‑product stock levels and report expired units.
• Receive, store, and manage reagents and proficiency tests at correct temperatures.
• Dispose of waste following SOPs, prepare waste traceability documentation, and coordinate daily waste removal.
• Clean work areas, cold rooms, fridges, freezers and equipment daily and record activities.
• Monitor equipment functionality and temperature, reporting any defects or issues to the supervisor.
• Read, understand and maintain competency in all policies, documentation and SOPs.
• Comply with SHEQ, accreditation requirements and contribute to continuous safety and quality improvement.
• Document and forward customer complaints, compliments or queries to the supervisor and interact professionally with internal and external customers.

Required profile

• Qualified Blood Bank Technician or Technologist with relevant certification.
• Ability to follow SOPs and South African blood transfusion standards.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
• Professional communication skills for interacting with internal and external customers.
