Professor/Associate Professor – Department of Global Health

About the role

Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is seeking a senior academic to lead the Division of Health Ethics, Humanities and Society within the Department of Global Health. The appointment is a permanent professorial (or associate professorial) position, with a secondary five‑year term as Head of the Division.

Key responsibilities

• Provide inclusive academic, strategic and operational leadership for the Division, shaping its vision as a leading African centre for health ethics, humanities and society.
• Develop and implement a divisional research and teaching strategy aligned with departmental and university priorities.
• Lead undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum innovation and quality assurance across health‑ethics, bioethics, health law, health humanities and social medicine.
• Build and manage an interdisciplinary research programme, secure external funding, and supervise postgraduate students.
• Foster collaborations with other faculties, health services, professional bodies, community organisations and international institutions.

Required profile

• Primary health‑sciences degree, active HPCSA registration and a PhD (or equivalent) in health ethics, bioethics or philosophy.
• Academic standing appropriate for associate professor or professor level, with a strong record of peer‑reviewed publications and research grants.
• Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, teaching, postgraduate supervision and educational leadership.
• Proven academic leadership, people‑management or programme‑leadership experience.
• Excellent communication, commitment to inclusion and ability to work across interdisciplinary teams.
