Professional Nurse Grade 1 - Specialty Stream (Psychiatric Nursing)

About the role

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Administration is recruiting a Professional Nurse Grade 1 in the specialty stream for the Umzimkhulu Psychiatric Hospital. The nurse delivers optimal, holistic specialized nursing care within a professional and legal framework, implements psychiatric nursing programmes and provides direction and supervision for nursing plans and patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out duties with proficiency within the prescripts of applicable legislation and provide specialized nursing care to meet set standards.
• Ensure all psychiatric nursing programmes are implemented and promote quality of care according to the professional scope of practice.
• Provide direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing plans and clinical practice, and maintain clinical competence.
• Advocate for and supervise the provision of patient needs, and keep accurate, complete patient records according to legal requirements.
• Take part in analysing, formulating and monitoring objectives, policies and procedures, including quality improvement programmes and clinical audits.
• Manage and supervise the use of human, financial and material resources, and exercise control over discipline, grievance and labour relations issues.
• Assist with performance reviews (EPMDS) and student progress reports.
• Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, staff and the public, in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and uphold infection prevention and control standards.
• Provide accurate statistical information for data management and take part in continuous professional development, research and evidence-based practice.
• Assist the unit manager with overall management and support for the effective functioning of the unit.
