Principal Engineer - General Civils

About the role

The Principal Engineer – General Civils will lead the design and planning of civil infrastructure such as earthworks, grading, roads, stormwater, sewer and water systems for diverse projects. The role supports both local South African teams and global AECOM business lines, operating within a flexible hybrid work model.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and planning of civil engineering infrastructure across multiple market sectors.
• Manage client liaison, reporting, design review and coordination of resources.
• Oversee deliverables including design calculations, reports, drawings, bills of quantities, technical specifications and project documentation.
• Mentor and develop subordinate staff while coordinating small to mid‑sized project teams.
• Ensure project execution complies with AECOM Quality Management System requirements.
• Perform moderate to complex engineering tasks, provide specialised technical input and identify design discrepancies.
• Develop and apply design procedures, gather engineering data and prepare technical specifications.
• Monitor budget, quality and schedule performance and propose process improvements.
• Conduct technical quality reviews of calculations, BIM models and drawings.
• Prepare construction cost estimates and effort‑based man‑hour forecasts.

Required profile

• Experienced professional civil engineer capable of handling moderate to complex design assignments.
• Proven ability to lead and mentor engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of quality management systems and design standards.
• Demonstrated experience in infrastructure design and technical documentation.
• Ability to work collaboratively with local and global stakeholders.
