Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Isotope Hydrogeology: Radon in Groundwater
Stellenbosch University
Job description
About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in hydrogeology to join an exciting research project focused on understanding groundwater systems in the Western Cape through the use of environmental isotopes, including radon, stable water isotopes, and other tracers. The project aims to enhance knowledge of groundwater origins, flow pathways, and timescales by integrating geospatial and isotopic data.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct field sampling of groundwater and perform isotopic analyses.
- Apply GIS and Python for data manipulation, spatial analysis, and advanced modelling.
- Integrate geospatial datasets with isotopic measurements to interpret flow pathways.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and mentor graduate students.
Required profile
- PhD in Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geochemistry, Nuclear Physics or a closely related field obtained no later than 2022.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong publication record.
- Proficiency in GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Demonstrated experience in fieldwork, especially groundwater sampling and monitoring.
- Collaborative attitude and ability to work across disciplines.
Required skills
- GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Python programming
- Isotopic analysis techniques
- Field groundwater sampling
- Nuclear/radiation physics knowledge (advantageous)
What we offer
- Competitive stipend of R300,000 per annum.
- Access to laboratory facilities and advanced GIS tools.
- Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations in hydrogeology, isotope geochemistry, physics and geospatial analysis.
- Supportive academic environment encouraging development in practical and computational hydrogeology.
