About the role
The von der Heyden Lab at Stellenbosch University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to lead research on blue carbon ecosystems, focusing on carbon measurement in South African salt marshes. The two‑year position will contribute to national and international efforts to quantify coastal carbon sequestration.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and lead field trips along the South African coastline to collect carbon data from vegetated coastal ecosystems.
- Analyse field and laboratory data, prepare peer‑reviewed manuscripts and present findings at conferences.
- Lead funding procurement, develop networking opportunities and mentor postgraduate students.
Required profile
- PhD awarded no later than 2021, preferably with a background in carbon quantification for marine or terrestrial systems.
- Publication record with at least two papers (in review) in ISI‑accredited journals demonstrating senior authorship.
- Valid driver’s licence for extensive field work and ability to work in remote environments.
- Strong scientific writing, communication skills and interest in science outreach.
- Experience supervising or teaching students at Honours to PhD level is preferred.

What we offer
- Competitive salary of R300,000 per annum.
- Fixed‑term two‑year contract starting early 2025.
