Ocean Freight Import Controller

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Ocean Freight Import Controller to join our team in Walmer, Gqeberha. You will own the end‑to‑end process of ocean import shipments, from the initial booking to final delivery, while providing exceptional client service and ensuring profitable, compliant operations.

Key responsibilities

• Manage Ocean Import shipments from booking through to final delivery, meeting client requirements and deadlines.
• Plan and coordinate imports, providing proactive communication throughout the shipment lifecycle.
• Track and trace shipments, ensuring milestones are achieved and CargoWise data is captured accurately.
• Liaise with origin offices, customs, transporters, warehouses, shipping lines and internal departments.
• Coordinate customs examinations, inspections and cargo releases as required.
• Process cargo dues, creditor invoices and payments, and negotiate freight rates when needed.
• Ensure timely customs clearance by obtaining all required documentation.
• Manage job costing, profitability and accurate billing within KPI deadlines.
• Resolve client and operational queries efficiently and maintain compliance with SOPs and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and ensure comprehensive handovers before leave.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12; freight forwarding qualification (SDS or similar) advantageous.
• At least 3 years’ experience as an Ocean Imports Controller or Client Service Controller in clearing & forwarding.
• Strong understanding of Incoterms, ocean import tariffs, customs legislation and third‑party requirements.
• Excellent communication, customer service and organisational skills with high attention to detail.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple shipments and meet tight deadlines.
• Basic accounting knowledge (debits/credits) and familiarity with international currencies.
• Must be based in Durban or surrounding areas.

What we offer

• Competitive salary between R30,000 – R35,000 CTC per month, negotiable based on experience.
