Occupational Health Medical Practitioner (Durban)

About the role

The Occupational Health Medical Practitioner will lead clinical and supervisory management of occupational health services across the eThekwini Municipality, aiming to minimise employee exposure to workplace hazards and occupational disease. The role involves overseeing regional clinics, coordinating HIV/AIDS workplace programs, and ensuring compliance with health regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Manage administrative, clinical, and specialised functions of the Occupational Medicine Services Section as delegated by the Occupational Health Physician.
• Assist the Occupational Health Physician in planning and organising services and specialised functions.
• Investigate service adequacy and make recommendations to the Occupational Health Physician.
• Liaise with medical, senior administrative, and other section staff regarding service requirements.
• Ensure regional clinics comply with Medicines Control regulations and oversee HIV/AIDS clinical management in the workplace.
• Supervise clinic staff on clinical activities and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of health service standards.

Required profile

• MBChB (NQF Level 8) or equivalent, recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• Postgraduate Diploma (NQF Level 8) in Occupational Medicine or Occupational Health or equivalent.
• Valid registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner and a valid motor vehicle driving licence.
• Minimum 6 years post‑qualification experience as a Medical Practitioner, including at least 2 years in Occupational Health (8 years preferred with 3 years in Occupational Health).
