Hospital Switchboard Operator

About the role

We are looking for a professional Switchboard Operator to manage the busy telephone system of our hospital. The successful candidate will ensure smooth communication between patients, visitors, doctors, and staff while providing courteous and efficient service.

Key responsibilities

• Answer and direct incoming calls on a high‑volume hospital switchboard, maintaining a professional tone.
• Handle messages, complaints, compliments and enquiries, ensuring timely follow‑up.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information at all times.
• Update telephone directories, contact lists and support ambulance communication.
• Provide administrative support such as filing, document auditing, mail handling and office supply management.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) qualification.
• 1–2 years experience as a switchboard operator or in a similar administrative/reception role.
• Excellent verbal and written communication with strong telephone etiquette.
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast‑paced environment and handle confidential information discreetly.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Strong organisational and multitasking abilities.
• Problem‑solving and complaint‑handling skills.
