Medical Officer

About the role

The Medical Officer will lead day‑to‑day operational management of clinical services, telemedicine, and managed care at Higher Health. The role ensures alignment with South African health policies, oversees mobile clinics and fleet management, and maintains epidemic preparedness and mental health support.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and adapt to new Department of Health policies, providing training to staff.
• Design, develop and implement strategic initiatives for telemedicine, mobile clinics and fleet oversight.
• Maintain epidemic preparedness and supervise mental health and disability support services.
• Ensure consistent, high‑quality clinical delivery across all sites.
• Coordinate emergency medical response, dispatch, and relief scheduling for continuous patient coverage.
• Manage stock levels of critical medical supplies.
• Conduct virtual consultations, diagnose, prescribe digitally, and refer patients to in‑person specialists when needed.
• Guarantee compliance with HPCSA Telemedicine Guidelines and POPIA data protection standards.

Required profile

• Proven experience in managing clinical services within a telemedicine centre.
• Experience overseeing mobile clinic operations and fleet management.
• Strong knowledge of South African health regulations and HPCSA telehealth guidelines.
• Ability to train and lead multidisciplinary teams of nurses and doctors.
• Excellent organizational and emergency response coordination skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with telemedicine platforms.
• Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
• Familiarity with digital prescription and referral workflows.
