About the role

The role combines independent research, grant acquisition, teaching, and supervision of postgraduate students.

Key responsibilities

• Design and conduct microbiological and molecular biology research projects.
• Publish findings in peer‑reviewed scientific journals.
• Secure external funding to support research programmes.
• Supervise and mentor postgraduate students.
• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Division and Faculty.
• Contribute to departmental administrative and managerial duties.

Required profile

• PhD in medical microbiology or a closely related discipline.
• Proven experience in microbiology and molecular biology laboratory research.
• Aspirations for an academic career as a scientist in medical microbiology.
• Registration as a medical scientist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, or commitment to obtain registration within four years.
