Media Relations Manager – Media Liaison/Relations

About the role

The Department of Advancement and Communications seeks a strategic Media Relations Manager to shape and protect the university’s reputation across local, national, and international media platforms. Reporting to senior leadership, you will work autonomously to build and sustain relationships with print, digital, broadcast, and specialist outlets.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and disseminate high‑quality institutional narratives that align with the university’s values and strategic priorities.
• Secure media placements and manage story distribution across appropriate channels to maximise visibility.
• Lead media engagement, including news cycles, editorial processes, and crisis communications, ensuring timely and accurate messaging.
• Collaborate with Communications Officers and other division units to coordinate messaging and response strategies.
• Oversee the commissioning and production of video and audio content to support media campaigns.

Required profile

• Relevant B Degree in Journalism, Media Studies, Marketing, Communications or a related field.
• Approximately 7 years of relevant experience, including a strong network of regional, national and international media contacts.
• Proven experience working for a newspaper, magazine or broadcaster.
• Demonstrated ability to design and execute crisis communications campaigns.
• Minimum 3 years of management experience.
• Experience in higher‑education communications is an advantage.
