Materials Tester (Civil Engineering Laboratories)

About the role

SGS South Africa, Matrolab division, is looking for a Materials Tester for its Civil Engineering Site and Commercial Laboratories. The role reports to the Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager and covers both on-site and laboratory work, helping with all tasks and keeping the laboratory clean.

Key responsibilities

• Clean all equipment regularly, including after each job, and tidy the work area of used consumables such as masking tape and tins
• Prepare test materials in the laboratory, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete and aggregate, with bench calculations when needed
• Follow all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system and report deviations, irregularities and non-conformances immediately
• Carry out other reasonable tasks assigned by the site supervisor, laboratory manager or regional manager
• Complete timesheets accurately every day

Required profile

• Grade 12, or equivalent experience recognised through Recognition of Prior Learning
• Proficiency in English and Afrikaans (read, write, speak)
• Punctuality and physical fitness to lift and move samples safely
• Integrity, good interpersonal skills and ability to command respect while maintaining good staff relationships
• Advantageous: sampling and preparation experience and administration experience

Required skills

• Familiarity with current civil engineering testing methods (e.g. TMH 1 and SANS)
• Knowledge of laboratory procedures and quality reporting
