Maintenance Assistant – Hospital Facilities

About the role

The Maintenance Assistant will work at Life Eugene Marais Hospital, reporting to the Engineering Manager. The role focuses on ensuring the continuous operation and safety of hospital buildings and equipment through routine maintenance and timely repairs.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and repairs across the hospital, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and mechanical tasks.
• Conduct routine inspections, identify faults or safety hazards, and complete daily job cards.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies, providing feedback to unit managers.
• Assist contractors, the engineering team, and the engineering manager during maintenance projects.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety in all work areas and adhere to occupational health and safety regulations and Life Healthcare Engineering policies.

Required profile

• Grade 12 qualification.
• Minimum 2 years of maintenance experience, preferably in a hospital or healthcare environment.
• Proof of competency in plumbing and at least two of the following: painting, carpentry, mechanical, electrical, building maintenance, or HVAC.
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and customer‑service skills.
• Ability to work flexible hours and handle SHEQ procedures responsibly.
