Legal and Compliance Officer – Corporate & Regulatory

About the role

Old Mutual is seeking a Legal and Compliance Officer to support its operations across South Africa. The role will provide legal advisory, ensure regulatory compliance, and embed AML best practices throughout the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor legal and regulatory developments (e.g., POPIA, FICA, Companies Act) and assess business impact.
• Design, draft and update internal compliance policies, manuals and SOPs.
• Conduct legal and compliance due‑diligence on prospective and existing clients.
• Draft, review and negotiate a variety of contracts, including loan agreements, security documents, share subscription agreements and service level agreements.
• Confirm loan condition precedents before fund disbursement.
• Manage external counsel for litigation and collections.
• Perform regular risk audits, identify legal/operational risks and report to senior management and the Board.
• Develop and deliver training programmes on compliance obligations and ethical standards.
• Establish AML compliance culture, develop monitoring plans and implement mitigating actions.

Required profile

• BCom Law, LLB or equivalent postgraduate qualification in risk and compliance.
• Admitted Attorney/Advocate or CISA designation preferred.
• 3‑5 years of experience in corporate legal, risk or compliance, preferably within the financial services sector.
• Strong analytical ability to identify risks and propose practical solutions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of explaining complex legal concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
