Legal Advisor - Litigation (6-Month Contract)

About the role

We are seeking a Litigation‑focused Legal Advisor on a six‑month contract to support the National Empowerment Fund’s post‑investment monitoring and restructuring activities. The role involves providing expert legal advice on loan defaults, debt recovery, and corporate restructurings for black‑owned businesses.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver prompt legal advice to the Post‑Investment and Turnarounds, Workouts & Restructures departments.
• Prepare and review legal submissions for the Portfolio Management Committee and other relevant committees.
• Oversee debt recovery, litigation, business rescue and court processes, whether managed internally or through external counsel.
• Draft and negotiate restructuring agreements, funding amendments and contracts with investee companies or third parties.
• Provide general legal counsel across NEF’s departments and manage external legal costs and budgets.

Required profile

• LLB qualification with at least three years of post‑article experience as an admitted attorney.
• Three to five years of litigation and court experience, preferably in corporate, structured finance or investment banking contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently under pressure and convey clear legal opinions.
• Strong problem‑solving, negotiation and legal drafting capabilities.
