Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor in Animal Breeding

About the role

The University of the Free State’s Department of Animal Science is seeking qualified academics to join its faculty on Bloemfontein Campus. Positions are available at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor levels, focusing on Animal Breeding and related disciplines.

Key responsibilities

• Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Animal Breeding and related subjects.
• Supervise postgraduate research projects and provide academic mentorship.
• Develop and secure external research funding and establish industry collaborations.
• Generate third‑stream income and contribute to community outreach activities such as Farmer’s Days.
• Recruit and mentor postgraduate students.
• Participate in departmental, faculty and university committees and perform general academic and administrative duties.

Required profile

• PhD (NQF Level 10) in Animal Breeding or a closely related field for permanent appointments.
• For contract appointments, a Master’s degree (NQF Level 9) with a commitment to obtain a PhD within five years.
• Demonstrated record of presenting research at national or international conferences.
• Evidence of peer‑reviewed publications or manuscripts ready for submission.
• Strong academic record and, for senior positions, national recognition and potential or existing NRF rating.

Required skills

• Experience delivering lectures and assessing student work.
• Ability to supervise master’s and doctoral research.
• Proven capability in grant writing and research funding acquisition.
• Effective communication of scientific results through presentations and publications.
