Lecturer in Mercantile Law

About the role

Nelson Mandela University is seeking a Lecturer to join the Faculty of Law, primarily within the Department of Mercantile Law. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research and community engagement, supporting the university’s academic mission.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate lectures, tutorials and assessments in Mercantile Law and related modules such as Labour Law, Environmental Law, Commercial Law, Law of Contract and Company Law.
• Develop and maintain course materials, including lecture notes and assessment tools.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students on coursework and research projects.
• Conduct independent research and publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Perform administrative duties and other tasks assigned by the Department or Faculty.

Required profile

• LLM in a legal sub‑discipline.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in teaching, supervision and research within a higher‑education environment.
• Demonstrated ability to produce scholarly outputs, ideally with at least two accredited journal publications.
• Experience supervising undergraduate or master’s candidates is advantageous.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of Mercantile Law theory and practice.
• Familiarity with Labour Law, Commercial Law and Environmental Law; knowledge of Contract and Company Law is a plus.
• Effective communication, administrative and interpersonal abilities.
