Laboratory Technician (Petroleum Testing)

About the role

Bureau Veritas Gazelle is hiring a Laboratory Technician (O&P Lab Technician) in Cape Town, reporting to the Operations Manager of the Cape Region. The role covers laboratory testing operations and ensures that operational and laboratory services are delivered efficiently from appointment to completion, in line with the company's Quality Management System, HSE policies, international and national standards and client requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out inspections and laboratory testing in the Cape Town area according to standards, ASTM/IP methods and client requirements.
• Liaise with storage companies, terminals and other bodies on matters such as tankage nominations and line fullness checks to speed up appointments.
• Keep the line manager informed on job progress and report sensitive problems or non-conforming products immediately.
• Complete field documentation accurately and help resolve disputes and discrepancies.
• Execute petroleum and other product tests using the company's Quality Management System and relevant standards, and keep the system maintained and revised as needed.
• Maintain the laboratory, its equipment and stocks, and keep it clean and presentable.
• Ensure annual medicals are done on time, attend site inductions, complete the 2MFMS daily risk assessment before each task, and keep PPE in good condition and the PPE register up to date.

Required profile

• Matriculation certificate, or essential experience or in-service trainee (Analytical Chemistry).
• Relevant marine inspection and testing / shipping experience (at least 1 year in the laboratory) or completion of the Analytical Chemistry practical 3 course.
• Physically fit, able to work under pressure, on shifts and at odd hours; national and international travel may be required.

Required skills

• Familiarity with test methods and ASTM standards for petroleum and related products.
• Attention to detail, good time management, coordination, clear verbal and written communication, problem solving and ethical conduct.
