Junior Software Developer (AI-Enabled)
Ozow · Cape Town
Job description
About the role
Ozow, a fintech innovator in South Africa, is hiring a Junior Software Developer in Cape Town to help build and improve its digital payment platforms. The role sits in a team working to replatform existing systems onto modern, AI-native architectures, with guidance from senior developers. It is aimed at people who want to learn how to apply AI tools effectively while keeping code quality high.
Key responsibilities
- Help replatform existing systems onto modern, AI-native architectures under the guidance of senior developers.
- Build features that integrate with Large Language Models (LLMs), using context management, embeddings and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
- Write clean, efficient, maintainable code and use AI coding tools while being able to explain every line of code.
- Follow safety guidelines for AI use, check AI-generated output and protect sensitive payment data.
- Troubleshoot and fix bugs, escalating issues early; learn about scalability, security and performance.
- Take part in code reviews, write unit tests and help with end-to-end testing, including for AI features.
- Learn CI/CD pipelines, containerisation and cloud environments (AWS or Azure) and deploy code safely to production.
- Work in an Agile framework (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives) and help maintain technical documentation.
Required profile
- Adequate foundation and proactive approach to learning; ideally around two years of experience as a Software Engineer or Developer, including internships or graduate programmes.
- Relevant tertiary qualification (IT diploma or degree) or equivalent practical experience from a recognised coding bootcamp.
- Curious, pragmatic view of AI and a strong willingness to learn and adapt.
- Team player who communicates technical ideas clearly in a fast-paced environment.
Required skills
- Proficiency in at least one of .NET C#, Python or JavaScript/ReactJS; experience with more than one is an advantage.
- Good understanding of databases and SQL, and familiarity with Git.
- Prior exposure to building applications with LLMs is highly beneficial.
