Junior Mineralogist

About the role

SGS Bateman's multidiscipline engineering team provides integrated engineering services for processing plants and related operations. This full-time Junior Mineralogist position involves performing routine mineralogical analyses and laboratory activities under supervision, while developing technical competence in mineral identification, analytical techniques, data interpretation and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Provide sample instructions and verify samples for mineralogical analysis with guidance from an assigned mentor (Mineralogy HOD, Senior Mineralogist or Mineralogist).
• Perform routine XRD, SEM-EDS, optical microscopy and automated mineralogy analyses according to client requirements, initially under supervision.
• Carry out basic instrument performance checks and simple troubleshooting, asking the mentor for guidance when needed.
• Process analytical data and ensure data integrity under the mentor's supervision.
• Assist in mineralogical interpretation and report writing, then submit reports for final quality check by the Mineralogy HOD or Manager.
• Help set up instruments and apply carbon coating as required.
• Follow laboratory work instructions and quality requirements, and take part in quality control and proficiency testing programmes.
• Maintain a safe working environment, report hazards and equipment issues to the Health and Safety coordinator, and complete final quality control of the project report.
• Prepare preliminary reports and data summaries, and keep accurate laboratory records and traceability by uploading files to the Mineralogy SharePoint folder.
• Complete competency development plans and take part in technical training to gain competency in laboratory techniques and software.

Required profile

• B.Sc. Hons. in Geology.
• Minimum 2 years' experience in the relevant field.
