Junior Cloud/Platform Engineer

About the role

Andile, a financial services technology and solutions firm in Rosebank, Johannesburg, is looking for a Cloud/Platform Engineer. The role is central to the infrastructure strategy, covering the technical vision, design and deployment of high-performance platforms with a strong focus on AWS, while also managing on-premise and third-party integrations. It includes mentoring technical teams, setting Infrastructure-as-Code best practices and keeping the environment secure, scalable and highly available.

Key responsibilities

• Support the infrastructure strategy and solution design, including technical specifications and architectural blueprints for AWS and hybrid platforms
• Advise on AWS and other cloud options (e.g. Google Cloud) for service selection, cost optimisation and standards compliance
• Help establish cloud security standards, procedures and controls, and manage identified information and cyber security risks
• Build, manage and support cloud infrastructure stacks using Infrastructure-as-Code for application teams
• Manage shared cloud services, local providers and in-house infrastructure (e.g. on Nutanix)
• Oversee daily operation, support and upgrades of operating systems and servers
• Set up backup schedules, database archives and data/media recovery solutions
• Act as technical gatekeeper for new requests and drive the day-to-day work of the Platform Services team

Required profile

• 1 to 3 years of hands-on software/platform/cloud engineering experience, with significant time architecting and managing scalable infrastructure; lead or senior experience strongly preferred
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Deep, demonstrated AWS expertise and a current AWS Professional-level certification (e.g. Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer Professional)
• Experience with core AWS services (VPC, EC2, S3, IAM, Lambda, RDS, EKS/ECS) and distributed applications
• Excellent communication, analytical skills and ability to learn quickly
