Instrumentation Laboratory Technician

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is hiring a Technician for its laboratory in Orkney. The role covers routine and non-routine analytical operations on instrumentation such as LECO, ICP, XRF, AAS and wet chemistry, while ensuring turnaround times, quality protocols and ISO 17025 compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Record, evaluate and validate instrumentation data (LECO, ICP, XRF, AAS and wet chemistry)
• Complete tasks within allocated time and plan work so that laboratory service goals are met
• Perform routine and non-routine analytical operations and ensure turnaround times are met
• Assist, under the guidance of instrumentation seniors, in validating new methods or modifications
• Report technical and managerial problems to the seniors
• Follow quality protocols for accreditation, quality, health and safety rules, and the ISO 17025 quality management system
• Maintain good housekeeping and record daily repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments
• Use the correct consumables and chemicals, and work in other parts of the instrumentation laboratory, Analytical Services or divisions when asked

Required profile

• Matriculation with Mathematics and Science
• At least 3 years' experience
• Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility
• LIMS administration and operation experience
• Experience in instrumentation, data collection and reporting
• Ability to speak, write and understand English

Required skills

• Sample preparation and fire assay procedures
• Basic knowledge of entering data on SLIMSS
• Integrity, attention to detail, punctuality and good interpersonal skills
• Flexibility to work shifts and overtime when necessary
