ICT Engineer II - Infrastructure (MikroTik, Palo Alto, VMware)

About the role

A well-established South African technology manufacturer with in-house R&D, production facilities and an international footprint is looking for an ICT Engineer II to join its infrastructure team at the head office in Randburg. The position reports to the Regional Infrastructure Manager for the Middle East and Africa and is a replacement role, so the employer wants someone who can step in soon. The role suits a hands-on infrastructure engineer who enjoys breadth, keeping core platforms stable, secure and recoverable across networking, security, virtualisation, backup and cloud services.

Key responsibilities

• Administer and support the MikroTik network environment, including routing, switching, wireless, VPN and VLANs.
• Maintain the Palo Alto firewall estate, security policies and remote access.
• Manage the VMware vSphere virtualisation and compute environment, taking part in upgrades, capacity planning and lifecycle work.
• Support backup, replication and data protection, maintain disaster recovery runbooks and take part in recovery testing.
• Act as a Level 2 and Level 3 escalation point for infrastructure, network and platform issues, lead root cause analysis on recurring problems and share knowledge with junior ICT staff.
• Support cloud and identity platforms, external DNS, certificates and edge security services.
• Keep configurations, procedures and technical records accurate and audit-ready, and use scripting and automation to reduce manual effort.

Required profile

• Five to seven years of experience in enterprise ICT infrastructure, networking or systems administration.
• Hands-on experience supporting MikroTik networking, Palo Alto firewalls and VMware vSphere.
• Working knowledge of storage, backup and disaster recovery.
• Experience supporting multi-site environments.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation and problem-solving skills.
• A relevant tertiary qualification and industry-recognised certifications.
